Namibia’s first combined green hydrogen production and refuelling facility has been opened by the country’s Prime Minister.

Dr Elijah Ngurare opened the site in Walvis Bay, developed by Cleanergy Solutions, that features an off-grid solar-powered 5MW electrolyser and refuelling station.

Hydrogen produced by the facility is being supplied to various dual-fuel vehicles, including trucks and tractors. From 2026, a train is also expected be run on hydrogen.

Beyond the initial use cases, dual-fuel hydrogen vessels are currently being manufactured in the Netherlands by Dutch shipbuilder CMB.Tech for deployment in Walvis Bay port later next year.

Supported by the German Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space, the project will also host research and training activities at an on-site Hydrogen Academy to support future developments.

“The inauguration is not the end of a journey but the beginning of a new chapter in Namibia’s industrial and developmental transformation,” said Prime Minister Ngurare.

It comes as an early development in Namibia’s hydrogen sector. The southern African nation has been slated as a key potential green hydrogen exporter thanks to its potential low-cost renewables.

Several large-scale projects are being planned. In June, Hyphen Hydrogen awarded a front-end engineering design and EPC contract for its 3GW green ammonia project.
